Therapeutic Boarding Schools
Less intensive than Residential Treatment Centers, but more structured and therapeutically focused than a traditional boarding school. For the right individual: a place to heal, grow, and keep learning at the same time.

What Therapeutic Boarding Schools Look Like
Participants live on campus and follow a structured daily schedule that integrates academics and therapy. Unlike Residential Treatment Centers, Therapeutic Boarding Schools offer more independence โ more freedom of movement, more peer interaction, more responsibility.
Treatment includes individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, psychiatric evaluation and medication management if needed, and a fully accredited academic curriculum. Programs generally operate on a semester or trimester schedule.
Who Therapeutic Boarding Schools Serve
Therapeutic Boarding Schools (TBSs) are designed for pre-adolescents and adolescents. They work best for individuals who have achieved some degree of stability โ either through a prior Outdoor Behavioral Health or Residential Treatment Center placement, or because their situation does not require the highest level of clinical intensity.
Not All Therapeutic Boarding Schools Are the Same
Some are clinically rigorous and look more like Residential Treatment Centers in their therapeutic depth. Others are closer to traditional boarding schools with therapy layered on top. The label does not tell you much on its own.
Dr. Cohen knows which programs deliver genuine therapeutic value and which ones are trading on the name. That distinction matters enormously when you are trying to find the right fit.
What Comes Before and After
Therapeutic Boarding Schools are often a second or third placement โ following an Outdoor Behavioral Health program or a Residential Treatment Center. They provide a longer-term environment where individuals can consolidate progress and continue building skills. Depending on age, the next step might be a return home or a Transitional Living Program.
