The Consultation Process
When you contact Dr. Cohen, you are not filling out a form and waiting for a callback from an intake coordinator. You are working directly with him — start to finish.

Quick to Start
Dr. Cohen can often schedule an intake appointment within 72 hours of your first contact. When a family is in crisis, waiting weeks for a first appointment is not acceptable.
Step One
Initial Phone Call
An initial phone call to share information about your loved one and learn about Dr. Cohen and the placement process.
Step Two
Clinical Intake
Dr. Cohen meets with you and any concerned family members. During the interview he learns in greater detail what issues you and your loved ones are facing, including academic challenges, mental health challenges, family dynamics, and more. This is not an intake checklist. It is a clinical interview conducted by a licensed psychologist who is trying to build a complete and accurate picture of the situation.
Step Three
Collateral Conversations
Dr. Cohen will have conversations with others who may be helpful in the process — grandparents, aunts and uncles, adult children, teachers, coaches, and others. He may also speak with extended family members or others you identify as having meaningful insight into the situation.
Step Four
Record Review & Professional Collaboration
Dr. Cohen reviews hospital records, past testing reports, school reports, and 504 and IEP plans. He also has discussions with previous therapists, psychiatrists, physicians, attorneys, and other professionals relevant to your case.
The goal is to understand not just the presenting problem but the full clinical history — because that is what determines the right match.
Step Five
Program Matching
Once Dr. Cohen has a clear understanding of the issues at hand, he begins matching the individual with appropriately selected programs. Having met with many program admissions staff, he can quickly make contact, share clinically important information, and assist in the admissions process.
He explains his recommendations clearly — why these programs, why this order, what to expect.
Step Six
Admissions & Transition Support
Dr. Cohen helps your family through the admissions process — paperwork, timelines, logistics. If transportation needs to be arranged, he handles that too. The transition into a program is often one of the most stressful moments in this process. Dr. Cohen stays involved to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible.
Step Seven
Ongoing Support
Placement is not the end of the process — it is the beginning of a new phase. Dr. Cohen maintains regular contact with your loved one’s primary therapist throughout their time in the program. He is available to your family for questions, concerns, and guidance as things develop.
The scope of ongoing support depends on which contract option you have selected.
Step Eight
Family Therapy Referral
While your loved one is in treatment, Dr. Cohen will refer your family to concurrent family therapy with an outside provider. He will help identify the right fit and make the connection.
