Residential Treatment Centers
24-hour supervised care in a structured clinical setting. For individuals who need more support than outpatient therapy can offer but who have moved past the acute crisis stage, a Residential Treatment Center is often the right next step.

What Residential Treatment Looks Like
Participants live at the program full time in a structured environment with clinical staff present around the clock. The therapeutic program typically includes individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, psychiatric evaluation and medication management if needed, and fully accredited academics for pre-adolescents and adolescents.
Length of stay varies significantly — anywhere from three months to two years — depending on the program, the individual’s pace of progress, and the family’s involvement in the process.
Who Residential Treatment Centers Serve
Residential Treatment Centers (RTCs) exist for all three age groups. Programs vary considerably in their clinical focus, therapeutic approach, and the populations they serve. Some specialize in trauma, substance use, mood disorders, or neurodivergent individuals. Some are gender-specific, some are coed. Two Residential Treatment Centers can look identical on paper and be completely different in practice.
How Residential Treatment Centers Differ From Other Programs
Residential Treatment Centers occupy the middle of the intensity spectrum — more structured and clinically intensive than a Therapeutic Boarding School, but less immersive than an Outdoor Behavioral Health program. Some Residential Treatment Centers closely resemble Therapeutic Boarding Schools. Others are closer to a clinical environment. Dr. Cohen knows the difference.
What Comes Before and After
Residential Treatment Centers are often the second placement in a longer treatment journey — following an Outdoor Behavioral Health program that provided an intensive reset. Depending on progress, the next step might be a Therapeutic Boarding School, a Transitional Living Program, or a return home with outpatient support. Dr. Cohen helps families navigate that decision.
